1.1  Description of the team, teaching and research department, and discipline

The Department of Toxicology of Zhengzhou University was established in 1978. In 2003, it was authorized to grant master's degree, and in 2004, it officially enrolled master's degree students. The teaching and Research Department has 6 faculty members, including 2 professors, 1 associate professor, 1 associate researcher, 1 lecturer and 1 full-time postdoctoral fellow. 100% of the faculty has a PhD degree. It undertakes the courses of "Fundamentals of Toxicology" for undergraduates of preventive medicine and medical laboratory majors, "Hygiene" for clinical medicine majors, and the courses of "Molecular Toxicology" and "Experimental Techniques and Methods of Toxicology" for postgraduates. Two teachers from the Teaching and Research Department won the first prize in the Teaching competition of Henan Education System and the title of "Teaching pacesetter of Henan Province".

The main academic research areas of the faculty include environmental toxicology, respiratory toxicology, neurotoxicology, molecular and genetic toxicology, food toxicology, computational toxicology, immunotoxicology, radiation toxicology, and drug toxicology. Focusing on the construction of a healthy China, teachers have adopted new technologies such as organoid construction, single-cell sequencing, nanosensors and gene chips, and successively carried out toxic effects caused by heavy metals, pesticides, coal coke asphalt, cigarette smoke, air pollutants (PM2.5, ozone, microplastics), new pollutants, as well as climate change, social environmental factors, indoor environment, etc. The research on the mechanism of poisoning, early diagnosis, the preparation and targeted delivery of stem cells, nanomedicine and other therapeutic measures has formed a high-level academic team.

At present, there are 5 National Natural Science Foundation projects, Henan Province and Zhengzhou City science and technology research projects. "Biological monitoring index of Occupational lung cancer high-risk population and intervention experiment of garlic", "Reproductive toxicity of metal mercury and its effect on offspring intelligence Development" and "Study on chromosomal instability of Bronchial epithelial cells induced by coal tar asphalt" were awarded the second prize of Henan Province Science and Technology Progress Award in 1996, 1999 and 2014 respectively. In recent years, the research group has focused on the toxic effects caused by climate change, social and environmental factors in the post-epidemic era, new indoor and outdoor pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and cigarette smoke, including respiratory toxicology, neurotoxicology and reproductive toxicology, and adopted a series of new technologies and methods to explore the mechanism of toxic action. Intervention and treatment are carried out through probiotic preparations and regulation of intestinal microbial diversity, preparation and targeted delivery of nanomedicine, etc., to contribute to improving and protecting the environment and improving the quality of human life. In recent years, this discipline has published more than 150 academic papers, published more than 20 books, and won more than 20 awards for various achievements. Graduate students and undergraduates have won national scholarships, provincial May Day Labor MEDALS, provincial Merit students, provincial and university-level excellent graduation papers.
