The Environmental Health Teaching and Research Team is an excellent grassroots teaching organization in Henan Province. The team currently consists of 11 faculty members, including 3 professors, all of whom are PhD supervisors, 5 associate professors, 2 lecturers, and 1 lab instructor. All 11 faculty members hold PhD degrees, with 5 have international study experience. Currently, there are 10 PhD candidates and 46 master's students in the program. The department is led by Professor Ba Yue as Director, with Associate Professor Huang Hui as Deputy Director. The teaching team includes 1 "Zhongyuan Leading Talent in Science and Technology Innovation", 1 Henan Distinguished Professor, and 1 Henan Teaching Excellence Award recipient. Four team members have also been honored with the "Most Beloved Teacher" award by students at Zhengzhou University.
Innovating Ideological Education Models Enhancing the Effectiveness of Character Building and Student Development
The Environmental Health team leverages curriculum-based ideological and political education, adopting innovative teaching methods to actively explore reforms in public health education. In teaching practice, faculty members connects typical cases from public health and preventive medicine with real-life examples from national disease prevention projects and the development of China's public health system, incorporating current events into classroom instruction and student development, creating a nurturing and lasting academic environment. The team emphasizes the integration of ideological and political resources into specialized courses, organizing events such as ideological and political lecture competitions, Party-building knowledge contests, and teaching development seminars to fully embed political education into the entire teaching and research process. This approach has achieved significant results. In 2020, the Environmental Health Department was recognized as an Outstanding Grassroots Teaching Organization in Henan Province. The courses Environmental Health by Professor Ba Yue and Hygiene by Associate Professor Huang Hui were approved as model ideological and political courses in Henan Province in 2021 and 2022, respectively. In the past three years, the team has also been approved for the major projects of education teaching reform in Henan Province, off-campus teaching practice bases for university students in Henan Province, quality teaching projects for postgraduates in Henan Province, and received four key projects for "curriculum-based ideological and political education" demonstration courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at Zhengzhou University.
Paving the Way for the Integration of Science and Education, Building an Outstanding Faculty Team
The teaching and research team adheres to the principle of integrating teaching and research to cultivate students and develop individuals with high-level comprehensive qualities by employing a "combined undergraduate and graduate" training model and regularly organizing research seminars for undergraduates to encourage active participation in research practice. Over the past three years, the team has guided undergraduates to achieve more than 20 projects under the University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, including 6 national-level projects. The undergraduate and graduate students taught by our team have received numerous honors, including Outstanding Student Cadres in Henan Province, Excellent Master's Thesis Awards in Henan Province, Top Ten Graduate Students at Zhengzhou University, and Moral Education Stars at Zhengzhou University, which highlights the remarkable effect of the team in educating people. The team upholds the educational philosophy of "making oneself successful while helping others succeed" and continues to promote a competency-based educational reform model, striving to integrate quality education, professional education, teaching, and research effectively to build a high-quality, professional, and innovative teaching staff. In the past three years, team members have published over 60 high-level papers, received 2 second prizes for scientific and technological progress in Henan Province, and received 8 national-level project grants, including the National Nature Science Foundation of China and the National Key Research and Development Program of China, along with several other projects, totaling nearly 10 million yuan in contract funding. Professor Deng Qihong, a member of the team, has received several academic honors, including "Zhongyuan Leading Talent in Science and Technology Innovation", "Top 2% Global Scientists", ‘Vice President of ISIAQ International’, ‘2022 IAAM Scientist Award and Medal’ and other academic honors. Professor Zhang Huizhen has consistently received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation, while Associate Professor Zhou Guoyu has been granted special support from the China Postdoctoral Fund. Young faculty members Huo Wenqian and Yu Fangfang have both received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation for Young Scholars. As of now, the team's members have achieved 100% coverage of National Natural Science Foundation projects, with growing scientific and educational strength. Several members have received honors such as Teaching Exemplars in Henan Province, Outstanding Party Workers in Henan Province, Outstanding Party Members in Henan Province, Excellent Graduate Supervisors in Henan Province, Top Ten Female Role Models at Zhengzhou University, Advanced Individuals in Moral Education at Zhengzhou University, and Outstanding Party Members at Zhengzhou University.
Promoting Industry-Education Integration to Cultivate Talent Serving the Healthy China Strategy
The team consistently upholds serving the "Healthy China" initiative and the development of the public health system as its highest pursuit. In recent years, the team has annually organized science popularization activities such as " World Environment Day on June 5th" and "World Water Day", integrating environmental health education into community service practices. They have continuously conducted projects such as the "Survey on Health Influencing Factors of Residents in the Yellow River Basin", "Improving Ecological and Health Literacy of Residents in Henan Province", and the "Survey on Tumor Risk and Its Influencing Factors among Residents", applying their scientific research results to societal development and contributing to the "Healthy China" strategy.
In response to the national policy of “taking the improvement of residents’ environmental health literacy as an important part of building a healthy and beautiful China”, the team has carried out ecological environment and health monitoring, education, and improvement initiatives in 10 counties across the province. The team produced a 10-episode series of educational videos, including titles such as "The Close Relationship Between Ecological Environment and Health", "Household Waste Sorting", and "Protective Measures Against Environmental Pollution", to widely disseminate knowledge and concepts related to environmental and health literacy. This work was recognized as one of the "Top 10 Science Popularization Works of 2022" in the "2022 Central Plains Science Popularization Accolades."
